Apache Cassandra.
A distributed wide-column database for large-scale applications.
About Apache Cassandra
Apache Cassandra is a highly scalable, distributed NoSQL database designed for applications that need continuous availability, high write throughput, and reliable performance across multiple data centers. Originally developed at Facebook and later released as an open-source Apache project, Cassandra uses a decentralized architecture with no single master node or central point of failure. Cassandra distributes data across a cluster of machines and replicates it across multiple nodes and geographic regions. This allows applications to continue operating even when individual servers or entire data centers become unavailable. Its architecture is especially well suited to large-scale workloads involving time-series data, event logs, messaging systems, personalization, IoT data, recommendation systems, and other applications that must handle massive volumes of writes. Unlike relational databases, Cassandra does not rely on joins or a traditional normalized schema. Data models are designed around the queries an application needs to perform, helping Cassandra deliver predictable low-latency reads and writes at scale. Developers can use Cassandra Query Language (CQL), which resembles SQL while following Cassandra’s distributed data model. Apache Cassandra supports horizontal scaling, allowing teams to increase capacity by adding nodes rather than replacing existing hardware with larger machines. It also offers configurable replication, consistency levels, fault tolerance, automatic data distribution, and support for multi-region deployments. Cassandra is available for self-managed infrastructure and is also offered through managed cloud services. Cassandra is a strong choice for organizations building always-on systems that must remain responsive under heavy traffic and continue functioning during infrastructure failures. It is less suitable for workloads that depend heavily on complex joins, frequent multi-row transactions, or flexible ad hoc analytics. Careful data modeling is important to achieve the best performance and consistency characteristics. As an Apache Software Foundation project, Cassandra is open source and supported by a broad ecosystem of tools, integrations, client drivers, and cloud offerings. It remains a notable option for engineering teams that need a resilient, distributed database capable of supporting large-scale applications.
