Tools for building and operating GraphQL APIs and clients.

About Apollo GraphQL

Apollo GraphQL is an ecosystem of tools for building, running, and scaling GraphQL APIs and clients. Its products and open-source libraries support frontend data fetching, GraphQL server development, schema management, API orchestration, federation, observability, and the operation of production graphs. Apollo Client is a GraphQL state-management and data-fetching library for JavaScript, mobile, and other application environments. It helps clients execute queries and mutations, manage normalized data, handle loading and error states, cache results, and keep application UI synchronized with server data. Apollo’s client tooling also includes developer integrations for exploring operations and inspecting GraphQL behavior. Apollo GraphOS provides a platform for managing GraphQL schemas and federated graphs. Teams can register schemas, compose subgraphs into a unified supergraph, run schema checks, review proposed changes, track usage, and monitor graph health across environments. These capabilities help organizations evolve an API contract while identifying changes that could affect existing clients. Apollo Federation enables multiple teams and services to contribute to a unified GraphQL API. Each subgraph can own a business domain while the composed graph presents clients with a single endpoint and consistent schema. Federation can coordinate data from GraphQL services, REST APIs through Apollo Connectors, and other sources without requiring every backend to be re-architected at once. Apollo Router is the execution engine for federated and graph-based API orchestration. It sits in front of existing services, plans how to fulfill a client operation, and distributes work across subgraphs and connected data sources. The router can be deployed alongside application services and configured for authentication, CORS, caching, safelisting, demand control, telemetry, and other production concerns. Apollo’s ecosystem also includes tools such as Explorer, Sandbox, Rover, schema registries, client libraries, and integrations for CI/CD and observability. Together, these tools can support a workflow from schema design and local development through deployment, monitoring, and controlled evolution of a production graph. Apollo GraphQL is a strong fit for teams operating GraphQL APIs across multiple services, clients, or development teams. Smaller projects may only need an open-source client or server library, while larger organizations can use GraphOS and Federation for governance and orchestration. Teams should review the current open-source projects, hosted features, pricing, and deployment options before choosing the parts of Apollo that match their architecture.
